Chapter 2 Preview  -  Actinic

www.actinic.co.uk

Founded in July 1996, Actinic is a company focused on developing ecommerce software. Actinic specialises in leading edge solutions for

small and medium enterprises (SMEs) that want to sell online.

We spoke with their CEO and co-founder Chris Barling.

Your name:                   Chris Barling

Company name:            Actinic Software

Website URL:              www.actinic.co.uk

Your company / website vision statement / goal:

To supply the best value and easiest to use ecommerce applications for

small and medium sized companies.

What you sell / services you offer (brief description of your company):

Actinic provides software and related services that enable small and

medium sized companies to sell over the web. We try to provide as

much help, advice and training as possible, as well as the basic

technology.

There are around 10,000 online stores using Actinic packages. Some of Actinic's better known UK users include the Royal Opera House, Lloyds

of London, Bill Wyman, Royal Navy, Michel Roux's Waterside Inn,

High & Mighty, Help the Aged, Royal National Institute for Deaf People, Land of Leather, Sunningdale and Royal St David Golf Clubs, Devon

County Council and many more.

We segment our market into DIY - that is small companies who have the

need or inclination to do their own implementation - and web design /

hosting partners who use our technology to deliver solutions to their customers.

Have you always wanted to run your own business? What were some of

your previous jobs / companies?

Yes, I've always wanted to run my own business. But I'm a very logical person so I tended to think about the risk. Eventually, with the support of friends and family I decided to take the leap. Most of my family are very academic so it felt like an enormous leap as I haven't been brought up in

an atmosphere of risk.  But I'm glad I did it.

Before starting the business I worked for Reuters, Cable and Wireless        and Amoco (now part of BP).
