Company name: Brighter World Consulting

Your company / website vision statement / goal/ what you sell / services
you offer (brief description of your company):
Brighter World Consulting offers strategy and operations consulting to
world-class organizations and exceptional startups. We offer an
innovative, results-oriented approach and we often invest in our
clients’ success by lowering our retainer in exchange for a percentage
of increased revenues that we generate for the client. The cornerstone
of our business is social responsibility and we work with both business
and non-profit sectors.
Have you always wanted to run your own business? What were some of your
previous jobs / companies?
Yes, I’ve always known that I would run my own companies. My first
company, SpaceWander Multimedia created websites for NASA, Jet
Propulsion Laboratory, UCLA and others.
Our websites weren’t cheap but they were extraordinary. We created a
12-minute virtual space trip featuring real NASA images at
www.spacewander.com
and that website won dozens of awards and receives more visitors than
most science museums. SpaceWander Multimedia still makes websites but
today its focus is more on building customized web-based tools that
automate tasks and information flow to increase efficiency for Brighter
World Consulting’s clients.
Before launching Brighter World Consulting, I worked at NASA’s Jet
Propulsion Laboratory for five years providing research, analysis, and
strategic consulting for their laser communications projects and
building multimedia-enabled web reports showcasing the best of NASA’s
Earth-focused satellite projects. Working for NASA/JPL required that I
learn new topics and apply my knowledge very quickly. I remember
working on a project about flood-monitoring satellites. I don’t know
anything about geology. During week one, I was reading a college level
geology textbook, during week two I was studying NASA’s flood-monitoring
satellites, and by week three I was discussing NASA’s projects with top
industry experts from the U.S. Geological Survey in order to complete
our multimedia showcases for the projects. It was really quite
challenging but also very fun. The intensity of the pace and depth is
quite similar to what I have to do for Brighter World Consulting.
Have you got any qualifications? Please tell us about yourself
academically?
My degree in college was in Cognitive Science with an emphasis on
artificial intelligence and the human-computer interface. I learned
about strategy consulting at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory.
My job in the Advanced Communications Lab was to make strategic
recommendations affecting the future of optical communications. Optical communications will enable data to be transmitted with 10-100
times the current bandwidth using only a small fraction of the power and
space that the systems utilize today.
My partner has an M.B.A. and J.D.
How / when did the idea of your website / company come about?
I was freelancing as a strategist when I overheard a start-up technology
company entrepreneur complaining that consulting companies charged fees
of $60,000 or more to produce a list of recommendations that may or may
not work. It occurred to me that an attractive marketing position for a
consulting company would be to charge a lower retainer and take a
percentage of the increased profits due to their recommendations. That
way, the consulting company is sharing the risk and needs to believe in
their strategies since the firm is essentially betting its income on the
results. Besides, it makes more sense for an entrepreneur to work with
an entrepreneurial consulting firm that’s investing in the company
rather than a firm charging hourly with little attachment for the
long-term outcomes. I liked the idea so much that I decided to start a
consulting company based on that model.
