Gizmo Design offers print, web and email marketing design services that
are creative and effective in producing sales.
Have you always wanted to run your own business? What were some of your
previous jobs / companies?
I've worked for small design firms and Zebra Technologies before
starting off on my own. I've always wanted to work for myself.
Have you got any qualifications? Please tell us about yourself
academically?
I have over eight years experience designing for print and the web in a
variety of industries, and have BAs from the
University of
Iowa in journalism and art.
How / when did the idea of your website / company come about?
I began my web site before my actual company began because I wanted to
freelance, but it wasn't a very serious endeavor. I knew I wanted to
call it "Gizmo Design" as a play off my last name, but also because it
seemed fun and not so serious. I finally took the leap when I was laid
off from my job, and I realized I was tired of bad bosses and others
controlling my personal and work lifestyles.
If you could give readers of this book one piece of advice when starting
up a business, what would it be?
Network like crazy, and read as much as possible. I've learned so much
from others I've met [both good and bad!] and from experts in the field.
Who are your role models / mentors and why?
Certainly the big designers like Paul Rand and Margo Chase, but also the
entrepreneurs in any field who endeavored to make their dreams a
reality.
My father, since he's been an independent photographer for as long as I
can remember, and my mother, because she supported us in the beginning,
and is a great financial advisor without the degree.
