Have you always wanted to run your own business? What were some of your
previous jobs / companies?
Thomas:
Yes…
I have never liked the idea of
working to make someone else rich, and being brought up in a family that
were self employed, I naturally always dreamed of owning my own
business.
Nigel:
Initially I had the desire to
create wealth through investing on the financial markets, however over
time my goals changed and I decided to go into business with a friend
after we came up with some ideas that had excellent potential.
Currently I still work full-time as an accountant while the business is
in start up phase with the view to run the business full time once it
becomes sustainable.
Have you got any qualifications? Please tell us about yourself
academically?
Thomas:
I was Home schooled from grade
4-12, giving me the opportunity to finish school one year early. This
gave me the chance to sample University. I completed one year of a
Bachelor of Science at University of the
Sunshine Coast, before transferring to Queensland University of
Technology (QUT) to Study Business, majoring in International Business.
However, my heart wasn’t in my study, and I always found myself too busy
thinking up new business ideas, to get good grades in my subjects. So I
decided to follow my heart, and quit University to start a business.
Although the first couple of businesses were not successful, I learnt a
lot from them, which I have implemented into Greenfees.com.au and my
other business ventures.
Nigel:
I completed year 12 at high
school and went straight into an apprenticeship as a mechanical
tradesperson for 4 years, however after working for a number of years as
a qualified fitter I decided to change careers and pursue my interests
in finance. I graduated from the University of the
Sunshine Coast with a business degree majoring in Accounting and
International business and haven’t ruled out the option of studying for
a CPA in the future.
How / when did the idea of your
website / company come about?
Nigel:
The idea came about several
years ago when I was booking a game of golf and realised that the
internet could cut time and costs of booking plus allow me to peruse
available tee times over a number of clubs. I had vaguely heard of this
happening in
America.
However
the idea didn’t come to fruition until I mentioned it to Tom who was
keen to develop the idea further.
