Have You Always Wanted To Run Your Own Business?
Yes – from as early as I can remember. Growing up in St. Louis, Missouri
I started my own babysitting, pet sitting, errand business in my early
teens while still a student at Bishop Du Bourg High School. In my late
teens and during college I had a part time business doing free lance
writing in addition to part time jobs as a grocery store checker,
assistant librarian and GS2 file clerk – jobs I worked at to pay my way
through college and grad school.
What were some of your previous jobs/companies?
In 1977, I was hired to open a small
St. Louis regional office for
Computer Associates International, a start-up software company of a
handful of people with a chic Madison Avenue address.
Company founder Charles Wang worked the graveyard shift as a computer
operator for the landlord in return for reduced rent.
I'd fly up to New York for meetings, and find him punching holes in user
guides, typing documents or cleaning - anything to make the company go.
The chaos of my first start-up proved too much of a cultural shock to my
system. I quit and then watched the company skyrocket.
Computer Associates is now one of the largest software companies in the
world. All of the people who were there when I was there became super
millionaires or borderline billionaires because they stayed and helped
the company become something.
I realized I should have hung in there and decided I needed to plunge
back into the startup arena. I consequentially sought out and toiled for
a series of hard core start up software related companies from 1979
until 1992 when I ultimately joined a young
Richardson,
Texas telecom/telephony software company,
IEX Corp. This time I stuck with the company for seven intense growth
years and cashed in when Tekelec acquired it in April 1999.
My buyout stock bonus combined with personal savings, off-hours
consulting projects and profitable investing gave me the capital to
focus full time on HairBoutique.
I am also the founder and current CEO of T&S Software (http://www.ts-software.com),
a successful telephony software company started in 1995 and still
successfully in business as of the 2005.
