Have you always wanted to run your own business? What were some of your
previous jobs / companies?
In reality yes, it has always been something that is there. I think
you know as your mind is always whirring with ideas and
hopefully you have the gall to try and make one of them a reality.
I think you are born with a desire to do things and take risks, although
a lot of it comes from stimuli you are subject to when growing up and
starting your own business.
I got a lot of influence from my father who has run a small
property development company for about 18 years. As a child
you get to see, hear and observe things which can all be pretty exciting
- especially when £100 seems like all the riches in the
world to you at the time. In business that sort of money is talked about
like petty cash of course.
I guess ‘wheeling and dealing’ (for lack of better words) was
always in the blood and only needed a little nurturing to come
out.
Like any normal teenager, I did my fair share of working
part-time in shops and the like, and after getting the Internet bug,
I did some freelance work for some local companies – designing
web sites etc. I then got my first job in Cambridge with a
company called Green Cathedral which was a start-up itself. I worked as
a developer building, coding and designing web sites
for large brands and ecommerce companies. I fell in love with
the company and had huge respect for the founders, whom I am
still good friends with. Working there sharpened my skills and I
quickly got the taste for business and how it was conducted. I worked
there for over 2 years and had a lot of fun, then just after
my 21st birthday, I decided that it was time for me to test myself
and setup a business.
