Chapter 11  -  Hostway

www.hostway.co.uk

Hostway UK is part of the Hostway Corporation, a company established in 1996 and now one of the five largest hosting companies in the world. With operations in the U.K., the United States, Germany, Holland, Korea, Australia and Canada.

We spoke to the founder and Managing Director of Hostway

UK, Rob Lovell.

Your name:                   Rob Lovell

Company name:            Hostway

Website URL:              www.hostway.co.uk

Your company / website vision statement / goal:

Hostway’s mission is to offer customers industry-leading web

hosting services and tools coupled with superior customer service. Together, they enable our clients to broaden their reach and

achieve their own particular online goals, whatever the size of

their organisation or project. We aim to strike an effective

balance between supplying services that not only demystify and simplify the website creation and hosting process for non-experts, but also appeal very strongly to professionals and businesses who

value our flexible, stable, technology driven solutions. Open,

honest communications with our customers, and clear, affordable pricing are also distinguishing characteristics of the way we do business.

What you sell / services you offer (brief description of your company):

Hostway supply award-winning web hosting services to now

over 350,000 customers worldwide, from eight locations in the

US, Canada, the UK, the Netherlands, Germany, Korea, and Australia. Hostway offers a wide range of managed hosting

services ranging from simple shared hosting plans and domain

name registration, to complete dedicated server and Virtual

Private Server solutions. In short, we perform the underlying functions that enable individuals and businesses to operate and provision their web site effectively to the world.

Have you always wanted to run your own business? What were some of your previous jobs / companies?

In reality yes, it has always been something that is there.  I think

you know as your mind is always whirring with ideas and

hopefully you have the gall to try and make one of them a reality.

I think you are born with a desire to do things and take risks, although a lot of it comes from stimuli you are subject to when growing up and starting your own business.

I got a lot of influence from my father who has run a small

property development company for about 18 years.  As a child

you get to see, hear and observe things which can all be pretty exciting - especially when £100 seems like all the riches in the

world to you at the time. In business that sort of money is talked about like petty cash of course.

I guess ‘wheeling and dealing’ (for lack of better words) was

always in the blood and only needed a little nurturing to come

out.

Like any normal teenager, I did my fair share of working

part-time in shops and the like, and after getting the Internet bug,

I did some freelance work for some local companies – designing

web sites etc.  I then got my first job in Cambridge with a

company called Green Cathedral which was a start-up itself.  I worked as a developer building, coding and designing web sites

for large brands and ecommerce companies.  I fell in love with

the company and had huge respect for the founders, whom I am

still good friends with.  Working there sharpened my skills and I quickly got the taste for business and how it was conducted.  I worked there for over 2 years and had a lot of fun, then just after

my 21st birthday, I decided that it was time for me to test myself

and setup a business.
