What you sell / services you offer (brief description of your
company):
Refresh has 3 core revenue streams: advertising and promotion
(online, email, mobile, etc.); market research; and consultancy. We
work with a wide range of companies – from film distributors to
lifestyle brands – who are looking to understand or raise awareness
amongst British youth.
Have you always wanted to run your own business? What were some of
your previous jobs / companies?
The prospect of working for a large organization never particularly
appealed. When running your own company, you have so much more
control over everything from your day-to-day activities to your
overall strategy and the company’s direction. Times that I’ve worked
for large companies in the past, I’ve been frustrated by the
bureaucracy,
lack of new ideas, lack of initiative and the inability of anyone to
take any risk, however small.
How / when did the idea of your website / company come about?
Refresh was set up in the early days of the commercial internet,
partly as a proof of concept, partly to demonstrate the effect of
word-of-mouth marketing. The site quickly became popular and an
organization was set up to take it forward as a commercial venture.
If you could give readers of this book one piece of advice what
would it be?
Never expect instant success… even with the best plan in the world,
your sales cycle will always take longer than you expect. Just don’t
give up.
Who are your role models / mentors and why?
I admire the success of Richard Branson, how he built an empire from
ordinary beginnings and the way he can charge millions of pounds
just to lend his brand to a company.
