espotting a UK based search engine.
How / when did the idea of your website / company come about?
The domain name screensavers.com was acquired in July 2003.
Before the purchase we thought, what do people want off the
internet? What would they download? MP3’s and screensavers were the
obvious choice.
Screensavers was a low cost way to target the younger audience.
Which is a very important market for advertisers.
If you could give readers of this book one piece of advice what
would it be?
Have multiple options; don’t put all your eggs in one basket. The
internet is a beautiful place; you get very clean, very precise
results.
Testing, testing, testing, if you’re on the internet shame on you if
you’re not testing.
Excluding yours, what company / website do you like / admire the
most?
You have to admire the big names Google, eBay. They have great
financials, quirky brands with their own personality, and are very
user friendly.
Landmark Communications which is a large holding company for
internet companies such as weather.com, coolsavings.com and a couple
of others.
They have pulled themselves out of financial trouble and really
gained some respectable earnings.
Another is Amazon; an early player they fell out of favorability but
are back up in search of profitability. In terms of usability /
technology they did a wonderful job.
What / when do you think the turning point for your business was?
