Chapter 17 - Threadless
www.threadless.com
The guys at SkinnyCorp / Threadless are a group of fresh thinkers
with loads of experience. Started in 2000, skinnyCorp was
created to be an environment for down-to-earth, creative
problem-solvers to come together to do some seriously
spectacular work.
We spoke to the president of SkinnyCorp Jake Nickell.
Your name: Jake Nickell
Company name: SkinnyCorp
(with a ton of DBA's ... see below)
Website URL:
Our claim to fame is Threadless (threadless.com) and the
umbrella company to all of our businesses is skinnyCorp (skinnycorp.com)
but we also have a lot of other projects. In this
interview I will talk mostly about Threadless.
A mostly complete list: skinnycorp.com, threadless.com,
15megsoffame.com, nakedandangry.com, omgclothing.com,
iparklikeanidiot.com, extratasty.com, yayhooray.com
Your company / website vision statement / goal:
Threadless aims to create a community driven commerce model
by hosting an ongoing tee shirt design competition. Anyone can
enter the contest at anytime, score designs and the best are
printed and sold from the site.
What you sell / services you offer (brief description of your company):
Threadless sells screen printed tee shirts designed by people all
around the world.
Have you always wanted to run your own business? What were some of your
previous jobs / companies?
Yea, I've always thought that would be fun to do. I've been
working in the web development industry for the past 10 years.
Have you got any qualifications? Please tell us about yourself
academically?
I never finished school, but, funny story - a book publisher saw
one of my personal portfolio sites done in flash and really liked it
and asked me to write a chapter of a book on Flash
Actionscripting so I did. That book was then used in a class at
my school as the textbook. And I hadn't even taken that class
yet! That was about the time that I dropped out of school and
started focusing on my business completely full time.
How / when did the idea of your website / company come about?
I was a frequent visitor to a forum for designers called dreamless.org.
I entered a contest for a tee shirt design for an event in
London
and won. One of the other
members of dreamless that I talked to
quite a bit (Jacob DeHart)
and I started Threadless together at
that point.
