Your name: Daniel James
Company name: Three Rings
Website URL:
www.threerings.net
Your company / website vision statement / goal:
Three Rings is a developer and operator of online games. Our goal is to
be the 'best little online games company in the world'.
What you sell / services you offer (brief description of your company):
We currently offer one game, Puzzle Pirates, which is a massively
multi-player online game for casual players. Three Rings developed the
game and provides ongoing upgrades, customer support and billing to an
audience of around 30,000 active players and 15,000 paying customers.
After four years we are now starting to work on new games.
Have you always wanted to run your own business? What were some of your
previous jobs / companies?
I have started four or five companies, the first was when I was 18, so
yes, I think I've always had an entrepreneurial bent. I've only worked
for a few other companies, including a stint at Sierra Online, a large
games publisher.
Have you got any qualifications? Please tell us about yourself
academically?
I have a degree in Computer Science and Philosophy. I enjoyed University
and I think that there's a lot of value in going to college, but often
that value is not necessarily directly applicable to later work.
How / when did the idea of your website / company come about?
The concept for Puzzle Pirates came about when I realised that the
combination of a Pirate theme, a social massively multi-player game, and
fun Puzzle games like Tetris would be very compelling. Once I achieved
this insight (prompted by my girlfriend spending a whole day in bed
playing a Puzzle game), the rest all fell into place.
If you could give readers of this book one piece of advice when starting
up a business, what would it be?
Work with people whom you trust completely and get things done.
Who are your role models / mentors and why?
I'm not big on role models, and historically I've lacked mentorship. I
think there's a lot of value in the latter, so I consider that a failure
on my part to find good mentors.
Excluding yours, what company / website do you like / admire the most?
