Have you got any qualifications? Please tell us about yourself
academically?
After receiving a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of
Dayton in 1990, I took a job with Anthem Insurance in the Emerging
Technologies division.
I began work on my MBA at Xavier University in 1994 and received my
MBA in 1997. In January of 1998, I left Anthem to start Incigna,
Inc. - a software development company based in Cincinnati.
How / when did the idea of your website / company come about?
The idea of the company came about in the mid-1980s but the
technology at that time didn't support the vision. With the advent
of the Internet, it became obvious that this was the perfect time to
launch WhatIfSports. The actual site was online in February of 2000.
If you could give readers of this book one piece of advice what
would it be?
I'd have to give two pieces of advice. Don't give up on something
you really enjoy doing. Even if you don't go public, there are worse
things than pursuing your passion. The other piece of advice I'd
offer would be to always watch your expenses - being financially
responsible helps
keep the company lean, which can be life-saving in rough times.
Who are your role models / mentors and why?
One of my role models has always been Bill Gates and not because of
net worth. I've always admired Gates because of his philosophy of
putting the company above all else. There's no ego, the answer to
every question is the one which will benefit the company the most.
I'm also a big fan of Jet Blue CEO David Neeleman. His devotion to
his customers is really unparalleled for a company of that size. The
sooner a company learns to listen to its customers, the sooner it
begins to gain lifetime customers.
